Perhaps you’re wondering where (and what) is Worcester, MA? You may have already seen our city in films replicating the nostalgic feel of the golden days of New York City. We have a thriving arts scene, craft breweries, 8 colleges and universities, our own Triple-A team the Worcester Red Sox, and nearby you’ll find swimming in summer & ice-skating in the winter, plus skiing, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and plenty of other outdoor activities.

We’re the second-largest city in all of New England, and about 50 minutes from the largest one, Boston. But the average rent here is less than half of what you’d pay in Boston, and we’re surrounded by gorgeous scenery: lakes, woods, and small New England towns that date back to the revolution. For those with kids, Worcester and the surrounding towns have some of the best schools in the entire U.S., and sledding and skiing in the snow is a rite of passage.

But the most important info is that UMass Chan Medical School ranks within the top 1% for student satisfaction, within the top 10% in primary care, and was named in USA Today’s list of Top Places to Work. We receive $400M/year for research from private and federal funds. In 2020 we received $290M alone from the NIH, outpacing all other New England medical schools except Yale. Moreover, our school will benefit from two recent generous gifts: $175M in unrestricted funds from the Chan family, and an additional $10M from the Manning family set aside to support student diversity and equitable care.

Below are a few pictures of Worcester and UMass Chan Medical School across the seasons.
